The Waltz originated from the dances of several different peoples in Europe but its main predecessors were dances performed during rural festivals in

the dance floor to 3/4 time..


 

INTERNATIONAL QUICKSTEP

The Quickstep evolved in the 1920s from a combination of the Foxtrot, The Chase G Chug, Charleston, Shag, Peabody, and One-Step. The dance is English in origin. Quickstep has a light-hearted mood and the movement of the dance is high energy, fast, and powerfully flowing, and loaded with syncopations.

INTERNATIONAL FOXTROT

Foxtrot is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor.


INTERNATIONAL TANGO

Tango branched away from it’s original Argentine roots by allowing European, American, Hollywood, and competitive influences into the style and execution of the dance. In 1912 tango was introduced to British audiences, showcased in the successful musical comedy The Sunshine Girl. Concurrently, the dance became popular elsewhere in Europe, particularly in Paris and Europeans began to inject their own culture, style and technique into the dance.


INTERNATIONAL VIENNESE WALTZ

Viennese waltz is the original form of the waltz. It was the first ballroom dance performed in the closed hold or “waltz” position and is a rotary dance where the dancers are constantly turning either toward the leader’s right (natural) or toward the leader’s left (reverse), interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch between the direction of rotation. A true Viennese waltz consists only of turns and change steps.

INTERNATIONAL CHA CHA

The Cha Cha is a latin dance originating in Cuba, where it developed from the danzon. Cha Cha is a quick, flirty, dance with lots of fast feet movements and a playful interaction between partners. In the International style, dancers step onto a straight leg in the basic movements.

INTERNATIONAL SAMBA

International Samba has its origins in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century. The ballroom version of samba is a lively, rhythmical dance with elements from Brazilian samba, but varies greatly from the original form of the dance. High energy with lots of hip-shaking and fluid partner work that travels around the dance floor.

INTERNATIONAL RUMBA

Rumba had it’s origins in Cuba, originating from the bolero-son. The international ballroom rumba is a slow and sensual dance emphasizing fluid movements and electric connection between partners.


INTERNATIONAL JIVE

The jive originated in the United States, from the styles of East Coast Swing and Jitterbug, but with highly syncopated rhythms. It is an incredibly high-energy, quick dance focusing on lots of high knees, leg power and fun.

Paso Doble (literal meaning in Spanish: double-step) is a traditional couple’s dance from Spain. It is danced to the type of music typically played in bullfights during the bullfighters’ entrance to the ring or during the passes just before the kill. The International ballroom Paso Doble stems from this style and travels around the floor with large, powerful, fluid movements.
